Beneath the Surface: Three ASX Mining Companies Exploring Copper, Vanadium and Critical Minerals

Mining companies listed on the ASX operate across a wide range of commodities, including gold, copper, lithium, nickel, uranium and vanadium.

The sector includes large producers, established developers and early-stage explorers. For smaller companies, a single drilling result, resource update or technical study can significantly change the market’s view of a project.

The ASX has a long history in the global resources industry. According to the exchange, it ranked first among selected global exchanges for metals and mining IPOs and capital raisings between 2016 and 2025. The exchange also provides mining companies with access to Australian investors who have considerable experience with resource projects.

Here are three ASX-listed mining companies that recently reported developments across copper, vanadium and critical minerals.

Kaoko Metals Ltd (ASX: KAO)

Kaoko Metals is a copper exploration company focused on projects in Namibia.

Its main asset is the Chalkos copper-silver project, which covers approximately 800 square kilometres in the Kaoko Copper Belt. The project includes the Otniel and Donkey Hill prospects.

The area remains relatively underexplored, which means the company is still working to understand the scale and quality of the mineralisation.

In early September, Kaoko announced that it had encountered visible copper in the first two drill holes at the Otniel prospect. One hole recorded visible mineralisation over 60.25 metres, while the second recorded an intersection of 51.83 metres.

Both intersections began at depths of less than 40 metres.

The drilling program was the first-ever drilling campaign at the Chalkos project. Kaoko said assay results were expected within four to six weeks. These results should provide more information about the grade and composition of the mineralisation identified during drilling.

What makes the update notable is the size of the project area and the early stage of exploration. The company now has more work to do across both Otniel and Donkey Hill.

Visible mineralisation is only an initial observation. The laboratory results will be required to determine whether the copper content is commercially significant and whether the mineralisation continues across a larger area.

Vanadium Resources Ltd (ASX: VR8)

Vanadium Resources is developing the Steelpoortdrift project and V-Iron plant in South Africa.

The Steelpoortdrift project is located within the Bushveld Igneous Complex, a region with existing vanadium and iron mining operations.

An earlier resource statement for the project included 4.74 million tonnes of contained vanadium oxide and 154.8 million tonnes of contained iron oxide. The resource was reported from 680.13 million tonnes of ore.

Vanadium is used in steel manufacturing and has also attracted interest because of its possible use in energy storage systems, including vanadium redox flow batteries.

The company recently secured the right of first refusal for its preferred site for the V-Iron plant. The right is expected to remain in place until July 31, 2027.

The plant is being designed as a critical minerals processing facility and is expected to use material from the Steelpoortdrift project.

The next stage for the company is the completion of a scoping study. Vanadium Resources expected the study to be completed by the end of September. It should provide more detail about the proposed plant, including its development requirements and possible economics.

The processing facility is an important part of the company’s plans because it could allow Vanadium Resources to look beyond the production of raw material.

However, the project still depends on further technical work, approvals, financing and construction. The resource size does not by itself confirm that the mine and processing plant will be developed.

Pivotal Metals Ltd (ASX: PVT)

Pivotal Metals is an exploration and development company with projects in Québec, Canada.

Its main projects are Horden Lake and the Belleterre-Angliers Greenstone Belt. Both projects contain copper, nickel and platinum-group metals.

Horden Lake has a JORC-compliant indicated and inferred resource containing 407,000 tonnes of copper equivalent from 37 million tonnes of ore. The resource also includes approximately 72,000 tonnes of contained nickel.

The project includes several metals, including copper, nickel, palladium, gold, silver, platinum and cobalt.

Recent Phase 2 metallurgical testing produced several recovery results. Copper recovery reached 92%, while the testing also recorded recoveries for nickel, gold, silver, palladium, platinum and cobalt.

These results are part of the technical work required to assess how the minerals could be processed. The presence of several metals may provide additional information for future project studies, although each metal would still need to be assessed in terms of recovery, cost and value.

What makes Horden Lake different from an early exploration target is that it already has a defined resource and metallurgical test work. The company still needs to complete further studies before the project’s development requirements become clearer.

Future work is likely to focus on resource evaluation, processing studies and the broader technical and financial requirements of developing the project.

What to watch next

Each of these companies is at a different stage of the mining process.

Kaoko Metals is focused on exploration results from its first drilling program. Vanadium Resources is progressing its plans for a processing plant and preparing a scoping study. Pivotal Metals is using resource information and metallurgical testing to assess the development potential of Horden Lake.

For mining companies, the next update can often be more important than the previous announcement. Investors and industry observers will generally be watching for:

  • Laboratory assay results from Kaoko’s drilling
  • Further technical details from Vanadium Resources’ scoping study
  • Additional metallurgical and resource work from Pivotal Metals
  • Project funding and development timelines
  • Changes in copper, vanadium, nickel and other commodity prices

Mining projects can take years to move from exploration to production. During that time, companies may face changing commodity prices, funding requirements, regulatory approvals and technical challenges.
